AoA technology is based on a receiver and transmitter combination. A multi-antenna linear array device (base station) acts as a receiver, and another single-antenna device (beacon) acts as a transmitter, assuming that the radio wave acts as a plane wave surface instead of a sphere. If the transmitter sending a sine wave in the measurement space is located on the normal line perpendicular to the array line, each antenna in the array will receive the same phase of the input signal. If the transmitter is not normal, the receiving antenna will measure the phase difference between the channels and estimate the angle of arrival using the phase difference information.

in AoD, the tracked device uses only a single antenna, while the transmitter device uses multiple antennas. The transmitting apparatus sequentially converts the transmitting antennas, so that the receiving side learns the antenna array architecture and converts the sequence. In AoD, the receiving device calculates its own position in space based on a plurality of target angles and positions; while in AoA, the receiving device tracks the arrival angle of each object in space.
